Home to Ebbw Vale with Oruj Defoite
Oruj Defoite is a successful reporter and presenter who’s worked for the BBC and ITN and is perhaps best known for her work on GMTV. She lives in London but she was brought up and educated in Ebbw Vale, the once-thriving town at the heart of Blaenau Gwent which suffered from huge job losses when its steelworks closed a generation ago. Oruj parents still live there and she cares passionately about restoring the town’s fortunes.
Already, there are many signs of life and improvement. The reopened leisure centre is a huge attraction which Oruj and her family never miss when they go home to Ebbw Vale. She says: ‘Add to this a new railway station and now a new hospital, you have something pretty good. Things should be looking up for Ebbw Vale and Blaenau Gwent as a whole - but everyone I talk to here recognises that there are still huge challenges ahead.’
So for Oruj, who loves her home area, it’s a matter of urgency to find a future for this battered community and, above all, jobs.
This documentary follows Oruj on the search for a way forward, Home To Ebbw Vale
